Teachers Responsibility for Managing and Monitoring Student Learning

Standard 3: Management

A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students and staff by ensuring management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe, efficient and effective learning environment.

Rationale

Classroom management is how a teacher organizes lessons, develops procedures, establishes routines, and carries out classroom rules and consequences.  Good classroom management is certainly one of the keys to a nurturing, student-centered classroom conducive for learning.  There are many ways in which a teacher can create a culture of learning for their students through classroom management techniques.

I use a point system in which the class can receive 5 points per class.  Each point refers to a specific part lesson and the behavior of the class.  (See Chart Below)

This system allows the students to see a framework for how the class will function.  It focuses on good listening skills, class participation, and involvement and how the class is engaged throughout the lesson. This helps to set clear and measurable goals for the class. Students know what is expected of them at each part of the class and if they fall short of the expectations the point is deducted for that specific area.  At the end of class we review the points and any area they need to work on for the next class.  This system is a great way to set short and long term goals for the class.  If the class received 4-5 points in their last class they get to listen to music, use the computers, and use special art materials. When they receive 30 points the entire class gets a popcorn party.  (I use the popcorn party as time for the students to work in small groups to create 1 work of art around a theme.  So even though it’s a nice incentive, it’s still focused around learning)

Reflection

In using this system for a while, I have noticed that it does a few things very well.  First, it allows the students to understand the format and structure of the class.  Next, it focuses on student participation, classroom engagement, and how well the class is involved in the lesson.  This system also allows the students to see a visual maker of their behavior and monitors classroom performance.  It sets short and long-term goals and manages a reward system.  Most of all, the students love it!  Students like to see their development and good behavior rewarded.  What makes this system great is how well the students are engaged in it and my responsibility to follow it.
