Standard 4: Collaboration with Families and the Community
A school administrator is
an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by
collaborating with families and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.
Rationale
As a school administrator, it is essential to be in close communication with community leaders. Collaboration with the community can make an influential impression on student achievement and can bridge the connection between the school and the local neighborhood. Recently I have been appointed the co-chair to the School’s Leadership Council. The SLC is responsible for making important decisions for the school and setting up community events and workshops for parents and students. One of the major events the SLC organizes is called the Community Clothing Drive. Every year around October, the SLC reaches out to local businesses and charity organizations looking for donations and contributions. This year we were able to collect over 4000 articles of clothes, blankets, small appliances, and kids toys. The Community Clothing Drive is always held on School Report Card night and the community turn out is always great. This event is essential to the local neighborhood as families are in great need of new clothes especially during the cold winter season. This year we were able to supply 300 families with new cloths, coats, and shoes during the Community Clothing Drive.
Reflection
For the last 4 years the SLC has been sponsoring the Community Clothing Drive. Each year we have countless parents and students excited about the event. It’s one of the driving forces for the community during a time of need. The Clothing Drive fills a void for the local neighborhood and allows for a deeper connection between the school and the local community. Each year the staff and teachers at our school help out with the clothing drive, but this was the first year that I was able to be part of the driving force behind the event. Being part of the SLC has afforded me the opportunity to work first hand in setting up important community events. As the Co-Chair of the SLC, I have been able to organize and set up major events with local community leaders. Throughout these events I have been able to strengthen the relationship between the school and the neighborhood. Community involvement has had an amazing impact on our school and I look forward to working with the SLC to coordinate significant events for our school.
